“Antinomy is a constant companion with me in life. Had I tried to say that because it seems impossible to understand beauty, especially in our current cultural environment, I can’t be an artist, it seemed to me entirely possible to also say, don’t be an artist then, just see if you can fall into beauty without realising it, and see if there are others who would like to fall into this with you.”

CV

  • Friebel was born in Cohuna, country Victoria in Australia. She currently lives in Austria, having moved here in 2002. She studied architecture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Melbourne and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (masterclass Zaha Hadid), sociology and theology (Universities in Melbourne) and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . She completed a PhD in Composition at the University of Huddersfield in 2013 with a portfolio of works entitled ‘Generative Transcriptions, an Opera of the Self’.

Since 2014 she has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz as part of the mathematics and art research project ‘The Collaborative Mind’, and teaches courses on ‘The role of intuition in forming creative flow’ at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and gives diverse lectures in festivals & conferences.

  • Tamara Friebel’s work includes compositions of new music, improvisation, live electronics, but also installations, video works and exhibitions. In her performances and installations she assembles everyday objects, such as a Singer sewing machine or small figurines on water lily pads, or 3d printed models which can be seen as an interface between her compositions and an architectonic approach. Her works are characterized by the very tangible, but often negotiate psychological or abstract themes. Between the influences of strict notation, improvisation and live electronics, tensions open up between exact adherence and open design, which seamlessly integrates into the music, with what would otherwise be difficult to assimilate.

  • Selected recent works such as the Damtschach project series Of secrets, I am silence (Carinthian Summer 2016), Suns & Daughters (2017 one day before the birth of her daughter) and There’s no clock in the forest (2019), the sound installation I Libertas, hold you little earth (Klanglicht 2016 Graz), the fashion show 2017 of the label Liniert, the composition/light performance Little Things Grow (Aspekte Festival Salzburg 2018), Silk Wood (Wien Modern 2018), Kärntner Lieder alt und neu (Carinthian Summer 2018) or A silver birth (2020, Ensemble Platypus) underline the diversity of Tamara Friebel’s work. In 2019 Dance Me To My Rebirth for harpsichord solo by Maja Mijatović was recorded on CD (Neos). The Agility of Perspective Nearness in a Lake of being (Wien Modern 2020), Hedda Duo, Kulturjahr Graz 2020/21 ListentoIntuition.com, Imago Dei (2022) Festival Composer.
